How NOT to make Gravy

by mommy23monkeys on March 4, 2009

My brother is a single, stay at home dad to three children.  One with a disability.  He does an AWESOME job at running his house and keeping his kids happy and healthy.  I really don’t know how he does it.  I count the seconds until my husband comes home from work so I can get a little help.  My brother does it all by himself.

Well, we were invited over to his house last night for dinner.  He made a couple of pot roasts in the crockpot.  I was watching him take the roasts out of the crockpots and pour the juice into a pan.  I didn’t think much of it until he took a bag of flour out of the cupboard.  I asked him what he was doing.  He replied “making gravy, why?”

He proceeded to just throw a few handfuls of flour into the pan of juice.  Now, if you have ever really made gravy, you will know that this does NOT work.  All the flour does is lump.  I just started laughing. I couldn’t help myself.  I asked if he at least had a whisk so we could try to mix it up and he said “no.” *eyes rolling*  He didn’t have a freaking whisk??

By this time, we were all laughing hysterically as we watched my poor brother try to salvage his gravy.  Oh, did I mention that he was also cooking for his potential new girlfriend?  Yeah.

So you know what he does?  He busted out his hand held mixer!  I could just see potential disaster here and ushered all the kids out of the kitchen.  I didn’t want them to be splattered with flying gravy!  And of course, I got my camera.  I didn’t want to miss this.

So we were actually able to salvage the gravy.  My mom just put it through a strainer and it took out the big lumps.  And to give fair props to my brother, dinner was actually very tasty.  Lumps and all.

By the way, the correct way to make gravy is to add flour to melted butter.  Form a rue.  THEN add your juice/liquid and stir with a whisk.  I have the basic instructions here with my Chicken & Dumpling recipe.  I’m going to the store this afternoon to get my brother a whisk.

Thanks for spreading the word!

Here is a tip: You need to create a roue before anything, mixing butter with flour or oil and flour, and cook that before adding anything else.In your bro’s case he added flour on top of the liquid. He could of mixed the flour or corn starch with some water before pouring it in, to make sure it diluted.

Props to your brother for taking care of his family by himself. I would have no idea how to make gravy until now.
