Mario Brothers Birthday Cake

by mommy23monkeys on May 3, 2009

The twins are going to be 3 years old next week.  OMGosh!  I can’t believe how the time has gone by so fast.  Since their birthday is the day before Mother’s Day, we decided to have their big party yesterday (a week early).  They LOVE Super Mario Brothers, so I decided to have a Mario Birthday.

I got really ambitious and decided that I would try to make a Mario cake.  I’ll have birthday party pictures later this week, but today I wanted to share my cake with you.  I think it turned out SO cool and I am very proud of it.

I used this recipe from Hershey’s to make my chocolate cake.  I have to say this chocolate cake is awesome!  It was so good and moist, yet dense enough to make a great decorating cake.  I borrowed my ex-mother-in-law’s 12 inch cake pans along with her giant cup cake pan.  I then started with a sky blue frosting color as the base.

At Michael’s Craft Store, I was able to get some pre-made, ready to roll, fondant.  I used the yellow fondant and a Christmas cookie cutter to make the star’s.  Then I used a shot glass on red fondant to create the small circles for the man-eating flowers.  The fondant cut-outs and two shades of green buttercream, and I had this:

cake2cake4The giant cupcakes were going to be my one-up mushrooms.  I was a little bummed that when I was putting the white frosting on the cupcake bases, the crumbs kept coming through.  I’ll have to find a way to prevent that in the future.  My thought was to have 2 one-up mushrooms on the cake, one for each twin.  The mushrooms that are on top of the cake, are covered in red fondant.  But I frosted the other four with red colored buttercream.  I got the Mario & Luigi figures from Amazon.  Here is the finished cake:

The boys are having the best time today.  Out of all their birthday presents, they have spent the day playing with their Mario & Luigi cake figures.  LOL.  I’ll have more birthday pictures later.  It was a great day!
