Well, It Seemed Like a Brilliant Idea

by mommy23monkeys on February 6, 2010

You know I’m on a quest to be a better mommy and try some new things in the kitchen, right?  The new cookbook I have been working out of is Family Feasts for $75 a Week: A Penny-wise Mom Shares Her Recipe for Cutting Hundreds from Your Monthly Food Bill.  So far the couple recipes I’ve tried have been great!

Throughout the book, the author shares little tips and tricks for making prep easy, cheap and fun.  Well one tip that she shared was to put vanilla ice cream in your kids’ oatmeal.  When you make oatmeal, don’t you usually add cream/milk and sugar anyways?  Isn’t that all that vanilla ice cream is?

Brilliant!

So I thought…

I was thinking this would be SO cool.  My boys will think I’m a ROCKSTAR if I let them eat ice cream for breakfast.  What a brilliant idea.  There is probably a whole lot less sugar in a tiny scoop of ice cream as there is in those expensive flavored packets anyways.  Am I right?  I couldn’t wait to try it out.

The first day went pretty well with Mr. A and NayNay.  They actually ate most of their oatmeal and yes, they were thrilled at having ice cream.  I thought I struck gold.  Yippee!

It was no surprise that BoBo only ate his ice cream.  Turkey!  But he is my really difficult and picky eater so I wasn’t really surprised.  All in all, I thought we had a winning idea and I would try it again.

I made breakfast this morning.

Nobody ate any oatmeal.

I had 3 bowls of oatmeal left on the table with a divot in it where once there was a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.

*sigh*

Brilliant idea gone bad.  Maybe my boys are just more difficult than the rest of the world?  Maybe they are just more spoiled?  After eating ice cream they sat at the table singing their “poopy song” at the top of their lungs.  I think it was too much ice cream…

Thanks for spreading the word!

Hi Melissa! Yes, they are totally ruining it for me!! I am having fun cooking some new things only to have them snub their noses at it. *sigh* I’m just going to keep trying, eventually they’ll get hungry and eat, right?

I think you’re going to have to outsmart them–put that ice cream in while the oatmeal is good and hot–let them see it, so they know there’s REALLY ice cream in there–and only let them have it when the oatmeal is “cool” enough to eat–in other words, when the ice cream is melted and inseparable from the oatmeal! Good luck if you try it again :)

Yeah, I thought about that, too. Letting it melt first, but I didn’t know if it would spoil the fun of it. I’ll try it and let you know if it helped. :)

The recipe that I tried last week that was a flop was Spinach Feta Bake.
Now, believe me, it wasn’t that I wanted to try this recipe at all, but it was
one hubby wanted me to make out of a new cookbook for diabetics.
Let’s just say, he ate it, told me to never make it again. He said it had a bad
aftertaste, and tasted like he had just ate a yard full of grass.
Nobody else could get through the first bite. I didn’t have to eat it because
I’m allergic to sheep products (Feta Cheese is at least 70% sheep milk and
can be up to 30% goat milk).
So basically most of supper got thrown down the drain and peanut butter
sandwiches given in their place.
Bummer too, because it wasn’t a cheap meal to make, Feta cheese is alittle
expensive where I live.

That doesn’t sound so good to me either but I’m not big on Feta. It is so frustrating though to go to the effort of making something only to have nobody like it.

LOL – well it DID sound like a good idea and I’ll bet they think you are a very cool mom. Isn’t it funny how some ideas just aren’t what you thought they’d be? Chin up my friend!
