My son’s doctor called me and said his questionnaire paperwork was “impressive.” Now, generally “impressive” would be a good thing, but unfortunately, it’s not really in this case.
Anthony shows all of the signs of being absolutely, without a doubt ADHD.
*sigh*
According to the Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry the following may be some of the signs a child will display if they have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder:
- Has trouble paying attention
- Has trouble sleeping
- Makes careless mistakes, no attention to details
- Easily distracted
- Has trouble finishing assignments at home and at school
- Has trouble listening
- Has trouble following multiple adult requests
- Is squirmy or fidgets a lot
- Cannot sit still, jumps out of seat to run or climb
- Seems “on the go” or “busy” all the time
- Talks a lot and interrupts others
- Has trouble playing quietly
Check, Check and double check for every single one of these signs.
Now, I did ask his pediatrician about possible food allergies. I did a lot of googleing and found that sometimes food allergies will present with a lot of these same symptoms. While his doctor did agree to have him tested and we are waiting on the results, he said not to get my “hopes up.” It’s his opinion that food allergy does not usually play a roll in behavior issues. This is one of those times where I don’t know who or what to believe. I would be ecstatic to find out he’s just allergic to something that can be eliminated, ya know?
I’ve spent a small fortune the last couple weeks on organic groceries. Trying to find snacks that are healthy and to break his candy habit. If you are an organic eating family, I would love to have some hints and tips for making it work on our very small family budget. I’ve started reading the food labels and that by itself gives me a headache. Some days I think how much easier it would be to let the doctor medicate him, but I just don’t want to take the easy way out. Sometimes the right way isn’t the easy way and I’m determined to help him (and me) by figuring this out.
ETA: Shortly after posting this his doc called and said we have NO food allergies. Darn. I was hoping I could just eliminate something and be good to go. Oh well.

well… at least you have a definitive dx. So next is what? trying to find PT or treatment , classes? Will keep you in my thoughts & prayers. It is hard enough dealing with a kids that has a hard time sitting still, and then knowing he has a legitimate reason for it, only slightly makes it better… until you can find ways to help him do things to get around it. It is just the turning of a page…Good luck!
