One Mile Down

I have begun training for the San Diego leg of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure walk.  Come November, I will walk 60 miles over the course of 3 days to help take a stand against breast cancer.  I am super excited!

I actually registered for the walk 2 years ago.  I talked my best friend into doing it with me.  I started walking.  But then I developed plantar facetious in my feet and it was excruciating to walk from my bed to my couch…much less train for a 60 mile walk.  So I bowed out.  My friend, however continued on with a new team and completed the walk.  I was so happy for her but felt like a schmuck myself for not pushing through.  I mean, women battling breast cancer don’t get to quit when something gets hard now, do they?

So, I’m back and trying it again.  Only this time I won’t be quitting.

It’s no secret here that I’ve battled weight issues for a long time.  I am using this 60 mile walk as my motivation to get in shape and get moving.  I have three little boys that expect me to keep up with them and I can’t do that sitting on my couch.  I’ll be sharing my training and fund raising efforts with you as well as my weight loss struggles.  They go hand in hand.

Last night I went with my mom and walked 1 mile at our high school track.  My first of many many miles.  Considering I’ve been sitting for 6 months, it was really great to get out and do this!

So, whoohoo!  Wish me luck!

    Hi Rhea,

I think that is GREAT. Mindy told me that you two are doing this. Is it just the two of you or do you have a group already? I say I want to do this every year but never do. I’m not even sure what to do or how to go about it.

More than ever I want to do it now because my mom is having surgery next week because they found something and want to biopsy that day and we should know something. She is facing a double mastectomy
    ((SP?)) possibly.

Thank you for walking you are doing it for a good cause.

Ama Day! You should totally walk with us!!!! How much fun would we have?? :) :)

Go visit the 3Day website http://the3day.org and read all about it. They give you training schedules to help get you ready and prepared. You do have to raise $2300 to walk but if you have a group you work together towards this goal. I know Mindy & I are already working on a garage sale for the 26th.

I sure hope everything is okay for your mom!! My grandma survived a double mastectomy and my aunt survived a single mastectomy (she’s got better boobs now than when she started!). Hopefully it won’t come to that and the biopsy is clear. I’ll be thinking about her!

Very awesome! I don’t think I could ever walk 60 miles in 3 days. I could walk a mile a day, but not 20.

I look forward to reading about your updates!

    GOOD LUCK

  3. I got my first mile in yesterday too! Good luck with your training. Its great that your mom was able to go walk with you. I was stuck with two kids in the stroller screaming Mommy its hot.

OMGosh, Holly. I brought my 5yo with because he wanted to come and I will never do it again. Really, TWO bathroom breaks in the stinky porta potties, Lots of: “i’m tired,” “is it time to rest yet?” etc etc. It was ONE mile. 20 mins!!

      *ugh*

      LOL

YAY that you started yesterday, too!!

I’ve wanted to do this for several years…but we don’t have a walk in our area. I participate in the Relay for Life…and I can’t wait for it this year. Last year I walked until it was called due to weather -it was incredible!

I’m so proud of you for doing this…what an awesome thing!

    • mommy23monkeys says:

Isn’t Relay for Life a 24 hour race?? That’s pretty crazy if you ask me! You know, cancer sucks, so anything we can do to end it is good…whether you walk 1 mile or 60!

  5. That is awesome Rhea! You’ll be doing 5, 10, 15 miles in no time! By the time the 3-Day walk is here, you’ll be ready for it.

  6. Woo hoo , Rhea way to go ! I’m proud of you ! I don’t even know if I would be able to do the 1 mile ! I would love to do something like this ! I;m still trying and fighting to keep to the workout thing and it is so hard. Can’t wait to read more and see some posts. Make sure that you let me know if you do anything to help raise money online and I will help in what ever way I can !

Thanks Lisa!!! I’m sure I’ll be begging for donations soon enough. :)

It is SO hard to get into an exercise routine. It’s why I’m hopeful that with a “goal” I can keep motivated.

    Good luck!
Now I feel like I should get off of the computer and…you know, do something productive….
