Operation Delouse. Otherwise Known as “FML”

If you follow mommy23monkeys on Facebook then you may know that we found LICE *gag* on Nathan’s head yesterday.  Let me make something perfectly clear…

LICE SUCK ASS

I overheard Bob having a little conversation with him in the late morning and Nate said, “my head is itchy.”  I was getting ready to go run some errands and didn’t pay much attention.  Went on my merry little way.  When I came home, Bob met me in the driveway.

“I think Nathan has lice.”

I just looked at him like he had three heads.  My little boy does not have lice!  How does a little homeschooled kid with barely a social life even get something like this?!  I took him inside to have a look.  Surely Bob has been smoking crack.

What I saw were about 4 little brown “bugs” crawling around.  YUCK!  But I told Bob, “these are not lice, Nathan has fleas.”

For some reason fleas seemed better than lice.

But a quick google search confirmed.  Lice.

Dirty rotten little bastards.

Bob went back to the store to buy some (holy shit SO expensive) lice killing products and Operation Delouse was put into full force.  I spent the entire afternoon yesterday treating everyone’s head (including my niece that I was babysitting….sorry Bro), gathering laundry and then cleaning the boys’ bedroom from top to bottom.  Let me tell you how much fun that was.  Not.

Last night my washing machine started giving me errors.  Please for all that is Holy don’t go out on me now!!

Have you dealt with lice??  Please help.  Send reinforcements.  Give me some tips.  What products have you used to get rid of them?

*UGH*

Oh no! Totally sucks. I have no advice since we’ve never dealt with it, but I do have friends who have. I would just wash everything humanly possible (and maybe Kimberly will chime in with something helpful) in hot, hot water and hope it’s a one-time thing.

Totally feel for you, friend. And, um, as a side note…I keep reading this as Operation Delicious. So, you know, there’s something for you to giggle about today.

My friend yesterday was reading it as “Dom Deluise” LOL It is a funny looking word, isn’t it?

  2. Heather says:

I don’t have any advice but reading this post made me itchy. I hope you get em all and quick!

My friend had to put regular mayo in their hair and then wrap their hair in plastic wrap. I think they just watched a movie while it was wrapped. It suffocates the lice and bc the hair is slippery, they can’t hold on and will slide out when you wash your hair. Then all the bedding and clothes were washed and everything else was vacuumed.

I recommend Happy Heads products–nontoxic and all natural lice treatment and prevention products. My daughter didn’t get lice when there was an outbreak in her class. Good luck!

  5. That sucks. I know everything you can’t wash (but I’d wash it and do this because I’m a freak like that) goes into garbage bags for 30 days. Thankfully we haven’t had to deal with this yet. I keep the boys’ hair short, and when we get that note from the nurse that there’s been a case at school, I spray my oldest with hairspray before he leaves in the morning. We were told in high school (a kid go tit from an elem. sibling) that the girls were least likely to get them because we use hair products and they don’t like that. You should’ve seen the gel and hairspray use after that.

    Oh Lice Suck!

You should wash everything he sleeps on. Oh man, I hope your washing machine doesn’t go out, that would be terrible!

  7. Lucy says:

Gosh Im so sorry Rhea. I got lice a few times when I was a child and it was always a few weeks of hell. Mainly just constant vacuuming and cleaning and keeping the kids away from other kids the whole time. I hope your machine can keep it together.

  8. Sarah says:

Rhea, my sister and I had lice “twice” when I was 13. I will never forget it. I would double check the bedding and anything fabric as much as possible. Recheck the hair and possibly give them all hair cuts (buzz would work well here). We got it “twice” because technically it never went away… something was missed in the cleaning (we were moving at the time too).

Good luck! I’m sorry you are dealing with this.

  9. Marianna says:

I am sorry you are dealing with this. Gosh that sucks. I hope you are able to get rid of them quickly without any repeat appearances.

  10. Erin says:

I actually got lice a few times growing up and even when I taught at a school. They like long hair:, so it’s usually found in girls hair. It also spreads from head-to-head contact – so he must have run into someone with it! I hope you find out who soon!

All you can do is treat it with over the counter stuff, wash and be diligent because, like fleas, if you don’t get them all they come back.

    Good luck!

My first question still stands… Can you put a flea collar on a kid?? And I had lice twice growing up. I was 8. My mom was mean.

It was really bugging me (snort*) that I didn’t know, so I had to look up what FML meant….thanks for the top-notch education there, Rhea ;) lol
